Francesco Paolo Casale

Francesco Paolo Casale is a Senior Group Leader at Human Technopole and a Principal Investigator at Helmholtz Munich.

After training in Physics at the University of Naples Federico II, Francesco Paolo completed a PhD at the University of Cambridge and EMBL-EBI, where his research focused on human genetics and statistical modelling. He then conducted postdoctoral research at Microsoft Research in Boston, developing AI methods for biological research. He subsequently led an interdisciplinary team at insitro in the San Francisco Bay Area, working on machine learning and human genetics for target discovery and prioritisation, before establishing his research group at Helmholtz Munich in 2022.

His research develops AI and statistical genetics methods that integrate population-scale genetic, molecular, cellular, imaging, and clinical data to understand how genetic variation shapes disease across biological scales. His work aims to identify and interpret intermediate biological phenotypes, localise disease mechanisms to specific cells and tissues, and build multi-scale models of human health and disease.
