Jan Funke

Jan Funke is a Senior Group Leader at the Human Technopole’s Computational Biology Research Centre, a Visiting Scientist at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus and a Guest Researcher at the Flatiron Institute of the Simons Foundation. He received his Diploma in computer science (master equivalent) from the Technical University in Dresden, Germany in 2010. In 2014 he received his PhD from ETH Zurich, Switzerland, during which he worked under the supervision of Matthew Cook at the Institute of Neuroinformatics in the field of neuroscience and in particular connectomics, i.e., the reconstruction of neural circuits from high-resolution electron microscopy datasets. Following a post-doc in Barcelona at the UPC with Francesc Moreno-Noguer, he joined HHMI Janelia in 2018 as a Group Leader in the Computation and Theory department. In 2026, he transitioned to Human Technopole in Milan, Italy.
