Francesco Cambuli
- Senior Staff Scientist, Sottoriva Group
Dr. Francesco Cambuli is a Senior Staff Scientist at the Human Technopole, in Milan, Italy. He’s responsible for data generation from patients’ tumor specimen and patient-derived models of cancer at single-cell and spatial resolution, within the Computational Biology Department, led by Dr. Andrea Sottoriva. His research focuses on understanding tumor evolution, during progression to metastasis and in response to therapy, especially in the gastrointestinal tract.
After pursuing a BSc and MSc at the University of Bologna (Italy), he obtained a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Cambridge (UK) (PMID: 25423963) and carried out postdoctoral research training at the University of Trento (Italy) and at the Columbia University (New York, USA) (PMID: 32915138, 35253958, 39633177). He worked as staff scientist at the Memorial Sloan Kettering and the New York Genome Center (New York, USA), where he participated as lead biologist in large-scale collaborative studies aimed to explore tumor cell plasticity in a clinical cohort of metastatic colorectal cancer patients (PMID: 39478232), and in a mouse model cohort of aging (PMID: 38712088). He was the chair of the Gordon Research Seminar 2022 on ‘Epithelial Stem Cell Niches’, and an OncoKB curator. From 2021 to 2024, he was a board member of the New York chapter of AIRI (International Italian Researchers Association). Over the years, Francesco has developed a strong passion as educator, science communicator, and community organizer.
