Deputy Rector for Organizational Autonomy, Administrative Innovation and Resource Planning of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, where he was President of the Doctorate University Commission and member of the Research Commission; Professor of “Glottology and Linguistics” at the Department of Modern Literature and Cultures, since 2018 he has been a member of the Supervisory Board of the Human Technopole Foundation.

From 2013 to 2018 he held the position of Head of the Department for university, artistic, musical and dance training and research atthe Ministry of Education, University and Research (then MIUR).

He graduated in literature and philosophy, since 1987 he has been a lecturer at the University of Tuscia (Viterbo), from 1996 to 1999 Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the same University, then Rector from 1999 to 2013. He was president of the Regional Coordination of Lazio Universities (CRUL), Secretary General of the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities (CRUI) from 2006 to 2011, then President of the same from 2011 to 2013.

He has been a member of numerous commissions and working groups on research evaluation at the MIUR and representative of the Ministry in national and international cultural organizations. Currently he has been appointed with D.R. 70/2021 member of the Working Group on the reform of university teaching and planning of the “Next Generation Europe” at the MUR. He is a director of the University of Salerno and of the Italian University Line (IUL-Florence).

He chaired the Evaluation Expert Committee of the IMT School of Lucca and of IUSS-Pavia on behalf of ANVUR in 2019 and 2020.

He is specliased in languages and philology of the ancient world, he is the author of about 200 publications and a member of scientific societies and of the scientific committee of numerous journals specialized in these sectors. He has directed numerous nationally funded local research projects (ministerial and of the National Research Council C.N.R.).
