Monday, the 16th – Director Iain Mattaj spoke as the distinguished lecturer at the inauguration ceremony of the 2019-2020 PhD academic year of the University of Pavia.
He was later awarded with the Medaglia Teresiana, the highest honor confered by the University of Pavia.
The university of Pavia was established as a Studium generale in 1361 and It has ranked among the leading research institutions in Italy and Europe. Famous scientists like Alessandro Volta (the inventor of the electrical battery) and Gerolamo Cardano (the founder of the studies on probability), lawyers like Cesare Beccaria (the 18th century advocate for the abolishment of death penalty), poets like Ugo Foscolo and Vincenzo Monti and – more recently – the Nobel Laureates Camillo Golgi (medicine), Giulio Natta (chemistry) and Carlo Rubbia (physics) spent most or part of their academic career in that University.
The Teresian medal was inspired by 18th century models and is offered to illustrious guests of the University. On recto of the medal is represented the coat of arms of the University, enclosed in the inscription “DCCCXXV Capitulare Lotharii – MCCCLXI Generale Studium constitutum“. In the cartouche there is the wording “Alma Ticinensis Universitas“; on the verso there is a refined modern version of the Palazzo del Piermarini with the wording “Athenae Insubricae restitutae MCMLIII. Athenaeum Ticinense scientiis, magistris, operibud suctum MDCCLXXII“.
The Harschnitz Group has been awarded a grant from the ItsME Foundation to develop a human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived brainstem model to understand brainstem encephalitis. The ItsME Foundation was founded in 2019 by Jur Deitmers and has its base in The Netherlands, with the goal to fight Meningitis and Encephalitis.
For the first time in nearly 20 years, Italy wins a Fellowship from the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP): our Karthik Ramanadane, Postdoc in the Coscia Group (Structural Biology), will pursue a challenging project on the molecular mechanisms of the thyroid at Human Technopole.
Two research projects from Human Technopole have won the Fondazione Telethon and Cariplo grant to uncover the genetic and molecular mechanisms of acute myeloid leukemia and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The projects, led by Alice Giustacchini (Group Leader of Genomics) and Emanuele Villa and Nicolò Caporale (Testa Group, Neurogenomics), have been respectively funded with €230,000 and €250,000.
Two Human Technopole researchers have been awarded the Marie Curie postdoctoral fellowship, one of the most prestigious fellowships for early career researchers: Dr. Carlos Jiménez and Dr. Albert Navarro Gallinad. Dr. Navarro Gallinad’s research project, presented today on National Women’s Health Day, will investigate the environmental risks faced by pregnant women by analysing almost 1,000,000 births in Lombardy over the last twelve years. Dr. Jiménez will study how the spatial arrangement of nuclear proteins contributes to optimal cell functioning.
Three young scientists from Human Technopole have, for the first time since its foundation, obtained a doctoral degree while pursuing their research within the institute: Alessandro Vinceti, Davide Castaldi, and Marco Tullio Rigoli, all enrolled in the systems medicine programme of the European School of Molecular Medicine (SEMM).
